Report: Chelsea will try again to sign £135m player once the takeover is complete, after coming close in January

Chelsea will reportedly try again for the signature of Ousmane Dembele once the takeover of the club is completed.

According to 90min, the chain of command want to reopen talks with the Barcelona attacker if he is put onto the market in the summer.

Chelsea to try again for Dembele?

Dembele’s contract runs out next month, with the player and his employers yet to agree on an extension.

Barca have been trying to tie down the 25-year-old for such a long time, causing frustration amongst the hierarchy and Xavi himself.

The Spanish side even attempted to offload the Frenchman during the January window, hoping someone would end the dispute for them.

90min claim both Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain made an offer, but Dembele was apparently happy to wait until the end of the season for a potential move.

He may well get his wish if the Stamford Bridge board are serious about their pursuit of the attacker.

Big money, small return

His relationship with Thomas Tuchel might be a turning point in the possible transfer.

Tuchel coached Dembele at Borussia Dortmund, overseeing arguably the best football of the forward’s senior career.

It largely went downhill after the manager went to Paris and the France international joined Barca for £135.5m (BBC).

Quite often such large fees are not paid off (just ask Romelu Lukaku or Kepa Arrizabalaga).

This has pretty much been the case for Dembele, who hasn’t experienced much joy with the Spanish side.

Is Ousmane Chelsea’s man?

Injuries can largely be blamed for his 149 appearances in half a decade.

He missed a large chunk of the concluding La Liga campaign because of a knee problem, followed up by hamstring issues.

But generally, when Dembele plays at full capacity, he delivers.

Between February 20th and April 10th, he provided nine assists in the league and scored one goal.

Contributions that Chelsea may desire to wield before too long, as they enter into a new era of signings under Todd Boehly.

Despite all the options available, Tuchel’s front line needs some extra oomph, one that on his day, Dembele can provide.
