Reports suggest that Graham Potter still remains against the idea of signing Cristiano Ronaldo for Chelsea.
According to The Athletic, the injury to Armando Broja has not shifted the manager’s view on signing the now free agent on a short-term deal.
The Blues’ injury woes picked up where they left off in the first friendly for the club since they broke up before the World Cup began.
The Albanian was left screaming in pain after suffering a knee injury that forced him off the pitch on a stretcher in the first half.
The options now look extremely short for the Blues as we approach the second half of the season. Only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Kai Havertz are recognisable options to play up front right now.
The Blues are reportedly close to agreeing a deal to sign Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig, however all the signs suggest that won’t be completed until next summer.
Potter still against signing Ronaldo
This opens up the possibility of a short-term option being the way to look when the transfer window opens next month.
Despite Ronaldo looking the perfect option for this, The Athletic have claimed Potter remains unconvinced.
His views echo those of his predecessor, Thomas Tuchel. The German was originally against the idea of signing the Portugal international when the possibility arose in the summer.
The way Ronaldo has conducted himself this season will no doubt raise concerns amongst any big sides who are considering launching a sensational move to sign him after the World Cup.
With Todd Boehly’s approach seeming to cater to signing players for the future as well as the present, the model does not suggest a move for Ronaldo would suit the mantra.
Nevertheless, it remains to be seen just how desperate the Blues are to add to their ranks as early as next month.
