Manchester United remain ‘comfortable’ with their position in the battle to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona, despite claims Chelsea could hijack their move.

That is according to Miguel Delaney’s newsletter for The Independent, who says that the Red Devils remain confident of completing a deal, despite Todd Boehly’s visit to Barcelona yesterday.

The Spanish press claimed earlier this week that Thomas Tuchel’s side were ready to ‘burst with force’ into the bidding for the Dutch midfielder.

However, Delaney has claimed that there is potential that Chelsea’s interest has been used purely as leverage by Barcelona, in an attempt to finalise a deal with the Red Devils.

United still confident in De Jong deal

The signing of De Jong would undoubtedly strengthen the squad in the midfield positons at Stamford Bridge. However, the Blues may be considering offering Conor Gallagher the opportunity to break into Thomas Tuchel’s plans next season, following an impressive loan spell at Crystal Palace.

Erik ten Hag’s side have always been favoured to complete a deal for the 25-year-old, with the pair potentially reuniting following their successful time together with Ajax.

The interest from the Blues comes as they remain firmly tangled in numerous transfer sagas, with Raphinha’s end destination still remaining to be determined.

Chelsea owner Boehly was spotted visiting the Spanish city yesterday, with it believed the topic of conversation was discussing a potential deal for Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso.

Reports suggested the Catalan side have offered Memphis Depay and Sergino Dest as part of a deal for the Spanish pair, with both struggling to nail down starting roles at the club under Xavi.

Whether De Jong joins or not, the Stamford Bridge faithful should be encouraged by Boehly’s hands on approach to signings, with him stepping up in wake of Marina Granovskaia’s imminent departure from the club.
