What Chelsea sources expect to happen between Marc Cucurella and Jorrel Hato

Chelsea put so much pressure on Marc Cucurella last season as the only recognised senior left-back at the club. Thankfully, he could get some much-needed support in the new campaign with the expected arrival of Jorrel Hato.

In fairness to Marc Cucurella, 27, he was outstanding throughout the whole of last season. Cucurella claims he suits Enzo Maresca’s system, and we would argue his third year at Stamford Bridge was definitely his best to date.

However, the Spanish defender could do with some cover and competition because he barely got a rest last term.

The encouraging news is that Ajax star Jorrel Hato, who can play left-back or centre-half, is strongly linked with a switch to West London. On paper, the 19-year-old Dutchman can help ease the burden on Cucurella.

Apparently, Hato will sign an eight-year deal at Chelsea ahead of an imminent move.

Chelsea sources excited by Marc Cucurella and Jorrel Hato partnership

Of course, the Blues still need to get the Hato deal signed and confirmed. If he joins the club, he will face the sizeable task of trying to dislodge Cucurella, who’s been one of the world’s best left-backs for a year now.

According to The Athletic, Chelsea sources at the club state there is belief that Cucurella and Hato could be great for each other as they fight for the starting left-back spot.

The report states that the club feel the eight-year gap can create a perfect mentor/mentee relationship.

Chelsea plan to offer Cucurella a contract extension, which would be hugely deserved after his growth at the club in the last few years. However, they can’t risk burning him out again in the new season with another 50-plus appearances.

In Hato, the Blues are set to add a young full-back who’s got great senior experience from several years in Ajax’s first team.

We agree that the blend at left-back between Cucurella and Hato covers all bases for Maresca. Finally, Chelsea are edging towards a very strong squad that is close to two top players per position.

Marc Cucurella can emerge as a leader

At the age of 27, Cucurella is one of the oldest and more senior figures in Chelsea’s squad. Therefore, we would love to see the Spain international really step up into a leadership role in the upcoming 2025/26 campaign.

Back in March, Cucurella admitted he’s been encouraged to be more vocal and lead in the Chelsea dressing room.

The full-back has definitely earned the respect of the supporters for the way he’s bounced back from a tough start at Stamford Bridge to become one of the first names on the team sheet. Now, he should be looking to kick on further and add leadership to his skills.

The dynamic between Hato and Cucurella should give the latter the chance to set the example, both on and off the pitch.
