Chelsea eyeing late move for ‘top striker’ before deadline day but it would be a waste of money

Chelsea could make a move for a Premier League striker this week as they look to add another No.9 to their squad.

With the transfer window not closing until Friday, Chelsea are still in the market for a new centre-forward.

Napoli’s Victor Osimhen is the name they are being heavily linked with, but the Blues do seem to have alternatives.

For example, they have been linked with Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, while Brentford’s Ivan Toney is still available. However, Thomas Frank was confident about Toney staying, and as the transfer deadline draws closer, it looks like that could happen.

Chelsea interested in Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin

It remains to bee seen whether Chelsea bid for Toney or Calvert-Lewin, but there does seem to be interest in the latter at present.

It has been claimed that Chelsea view Calvert-Lewin as a potential alternative to Osimhen.

Signing Osimhen looks extremely tricky, so perhaps the Blues will turn to the Everton striker.

However, doing so just feels like it would be a waste of money, especially after one of the club’s recent signings.

Chelsea better off using Joao Felix up front than signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Chelsea could do with another centre-forward coming in to compete with Nicolas Jackson, while Calvert-Lewin is not a bad one.

In fact, his former manager Carlo Ancelotti once suggested that he was a “top striker”, as per Reuters.

However, since then, the 27-year-old has had a lot of injury problems and does not seem like he would be an upgrade on what Enzo Maresca has already got. With that in mind, it is the kind of signing that may not make much of a difference for Chelsea.

Instead, it may just make more sense to start Joao Felix up front at times, with the 24-year-old already showing his finishing ability after scoring on his second debut for the club against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

As well as Felix, Christopher Nkunku is also capable of leading the line. If Chelsea cannot sign Osimhen before the transfer window closes, then that may be the way to go instead of bringing in a panic buy like Calvert-Lewin.
