Chelsea must forget about latest January transfer target unless one thing changes, Andrey Santos’ career depends on it

Chelsea loanee Andrey Santos has the potential to carve out a huge future for himself at Stamford Bridge, but one transfer rumour threatens to put that at risk.

Andrey Santos, who’s only aged 20, is one of the Chelsea players on loan during the current season. He’s enjoying a season-long loan with sister club Strasbourg in the French Ligue 1.

It was recently claimed that Chelsea have earmarked Santos for a place in their squad during the 2025/26 season, which is no surprise because he’s been in outstanding form in Strasbourg colours.

The Brazilian central midfielder has scored seven goals in 18 appearances across all competitions this campaign for Strasbourg. He’s even worn the captain’s armband for them, too.

Andrey Santos’ Chelsea career at risk if Douglas Luiz joins permanently

We worry that Santos’ Chelsea career could be over before it’s really begun because of one piece of transfer speculation.

Rumours this week claim that Chelsea are interested in signing Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz. Apparently, the Blues would like to bring the 26-year-old player to the club on loan to help with their current injury problems. However, Juventus only want to sell the defensive midfielder to help generate transfer funds.

Luiz would like a Premier League return after five successful years as an Aston Villa player.

While the experienced Brazilian star would be a decent short-term solution for Chelsea, we’d urge the club to completely forget about him as a transfer target unless Juventus change their stance on demanding a permanent sale.

It would make very little sense to splash the cash on someone with Luiz’s profile when Santos is waiting in the wings for a return later in 2025. If the Blues did invest in the Juventus star, perhaps it would block Santos’ path in West London and end his Chelsea career.

Chelsea must promote Andrey Santos

It’s worrying to hear that Chelsea are looking at alternative midfield options, even if it’s only on loan.

An ideal scenario for the Blues could be Luiz on loan until the end of the season before Santos’ first-team promotion in the summer, but let’s wait and see how it unfolds in the next couple of weeks.

Santos couldn’t have done much more at Strasbourg recently to impress the Chelsea hierarchy.

FOTMOB data ranks Santos as the fifth best performer in the entire Ligue 1 division so far in the 2024/25 season with a 7.71 average match rating.

On paper, the South American youngster is exactly what the Blues needs in the centre of the park because he’s great both offensively and defensively. He’d make an ideal fourth choice central midfielder at Chelsea to rotate alongside Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia.
