Jorrel Hato has too much potential for Enzo Maresca to waste like he did with £30m Chelsea failure

In the Netherlands, there is a lot of excitement surrounding Ajax defender and Chelsea target Jorrel Hato.

Hato is seen as one of the most talented and promising young players in Dutch football right now. It is hardly a surprise, then, that Chelsea are chasing him.

It has been claimed that Hato has already agreed an eight-year contract with Chelsea, so a transfer could be imminent.

If it goes through, people in his homeland will be desperate for Enzo Maresca not to halt his development and waste his exceptional talent.

Enzo Maresca has to utilise Jorrel Hato after ignoring Renato Veiga

You can argue that something similar has already happened with Renato Veiga. In Marc Cucurella, Maresca probably had the best left-back in the Premier League last season, while the 27-year-old was rarely unavailable for selection.

However, on the odd occasion where he was, Maresca still overlooked Veiga. In games against Liverpool and Everton where Cucurella was suspended, the Chelsea manager refused to give Veiga a chance, starting Malo Gusto at left-back in both fixtures instead.

Chelsea view Veiga as a footballer with huge potential, yet Maresca was very reluctant to use him outside of the Conference League.

Capable of playing in central defence, there were also opportunities to use him there, with Wesley Fofana missing matches because of injury. But again, the Portugal international was ignored.

Hato and Veiga are quite similar in the sense that both men are left-footers who can start at left-back or centre-back. Hopefully, though, things go differently for the 19-year-old, who has the sort of talent that you do not want to see go to waste.

Renato Veiga’s stats under Enzo Maresca

All in all, at times last season, Chelsea were in need of a player like Veiga. But in the end, he went on to make just one start in the Premier League under Maresca.

Veiga had no choice but to join Juventus on loan during the January transfer window, where he managed to increase his game time.

Veiga is now set to leave Stamford Bridge permanently as Chelsea look to make a profit on their £12m signing, whose talents have been wasted so far.

Chelsea are thought to value Veiga at £30m, a fee that Atletico Madrid looked ready to pay before they turned to David Hancko.
