Renato Veiga could be set to leave Stamford Bridge this summer after just a year on Chelsea’s books.
Chelsea signed versatile defender Renato Veiga, 21, from FC Basel a year ago, and he had a busy debut campaign. Even though he impressed in the Blues’ first team during the first half of the season, he left on loan in January to join Juventus and play in his preferred centre-back position.
Apparently, Veiga is expected to be sold by Chelsea this summer because they can’t guarantee he will play as a central defender. In fairness, he was used mostly as cover at left-back for Marc Cucurella during his first six months in West London.
While Spanish club Atletico Madrid are entering the final stages of signing Veiga, the latest speculation suggests there may be an issue over the financials.

Atletico Madrid and Chelsea disagree on Renato Veiga valuation
According to The Times, Champions League outfit Atletico are prepared to pay around £25m to sign Veiga this summer.
However, Chelsea value their 21-year-old talent, who’s a senior Portugal international, at £30m.
As Atletico attempt to lowball Chelsea into a cheaper deal, it’s worth noting that two unnamed Premier League clubs are considering a late move for Veiga, so perhaps the La Liga side will soon start to feel the pressure.
The reality is we think Veiga would be a superb signing for most teams in Europe, especially for around £30m, so Todd Boehly and the Chelsea hierarchy should stand firm over their asking price this summer.

What Roberto Martinez said about Renato Veiga last season
Despite his youth, Veiga has broken into the Portugal senior team in the last year, earning five international caps so far.
After Portugal’s win against Poland in October 2024, Roberto Martinez raved about Veiga. The Portugal manager said: “I’m very satisfied because he didn’t play like a young player, he showed an incredible maturity… He was focused and aggressive, he won all the duels, he is very strong in the air. I really liked his performance. I’m happy, but not surprised.”
It shouldn’t surprise anybody if Veiga progresses and enjoys a successful career for club and country, but unfortunately it won’t be at Chelsea.
