Before Chelsea’s 3-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday, there was a lot of speculation about Renato Veiga’s future.
After being left out of Chelsea‘s matchday squad for the game, that is unlikely to change.
Enzo Maresca has problems in central defence and midfield at the minute, but Renato Veiga was still snubbed.
The 44-year-old has since explained his decision to leave the defender out, which is not good news for anyone who is hoping that he remains at Stamford Bridge beyond the January transfer window.

Renato Veiga’s omission a technical decision
Veiga is a versatile footballer, able to play at left-back, centre-back and in midfield.
Even so, Maresca still decided to omit him from his squad for Monday’s game, despite being without Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia.
According to Maresca, leaving Veiga out was a “technical decision”, with the Chelsea manager wanting more attacking options on the bench.
When asked if Veiga’s absence was due to the transfer interest being shown in him, Maresca told football.london and other outlets: “No, no, no. It’s because of a technical decision. We prefer, for instance, Ty [Tyrique George] or Jadon [Sancho] as a winger on the bench if we need to change both and then we changed both. The reason why was just for that.”
The fact that the 21-year-old cannot make the Chelsea bench during an injury crisis does not bode well for him, though. At this stage, everything is pointing towards a Stamford Bridge exit this month as Veiga continues to attract interest from multiple clubs.
While Maresca could have started Veiga in central defence against Wolves, the Italian opted to go with Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah, who has just returned from his loan spell at Crystal Palace, instead.

Who is Renato Veiga being linked to?
Marseille are one club who have been linked with Veiga recently, while it is thought that Juventus are also now interested in signing the Portuguese.
Borussia Dortmund are keen on Veiga as well, though Chelsea’s desire for a permanent deal appears to be an issue.
According to The Athletic, the Blues have no interest in loaning out Veiga and want a £29m transfer fee for him.
Whether someone is willing to pay that remains to be seen, but all of the above indicates that Veiga’s short Chelsea career could come to an end in 2025.
