When you look at Chelsea’s current squad, despite all of the investment, there are quite a few issues with it.

For example, there is not sufficient enough cover for striker Nicolas Jackson, while goalkeeper has also been a problem position of late for Enzo Maresca.

Maresca recently dropped Robert Sanchez, who was making some serious errors between the sticks.

But the biggest issue with Chelsea’s squad is arguably its lack of experience. With that in mind, The Chelsea Chronicle has taken a look at six seasoned footballers the Blues may be able to sign for free in the summer.

Leroy Sane

Club: Bayern Munich

Position: Winger

Age: 29

Chelsea wanted to sign a left winger during the January transfer window but failed. However, a fine opportunity could be about to present itself.

Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sane is out of contract at the end of the season. He just turned 29 and has plenty of Premier League experience. If he is interested in a move to Chelsea, then it is something that the club have to explore.

Kyle Walker-Peters

Club: Southampton

Position: Right-back

Age: 27

Not as glamorous as Sane, but Kyle Walker-Peters could be a very useful signing for Chelsea. Again, he is someone who is familiar with English football, while the Southampton man can play at both right-back and left-back.

Walker-Peters is someone Chelsea have looked at before, with The Guardian claiming that former Blues manager Thomas Tuchel considered him in 2022 when looking for cover for Reece James.

Joshua Kimmich

Club: Bayern Munich

Position: Defensive midfielder

Age: 30

Joshua Kimmich is another player at Bayern who has entered the final year of his contract.

The German is a very experienced defensive midfielder who can also play at right-back. He has won everything the game has to offer and would undoubtedly be an excellent addition to Maresca’s squad.

The only problem is, given that Kimmich is such a good footballer, better sides than Chelsea will be after him this summer.

Frank Anguissa

Club: Napoli

Position: Central midfielder

Age: 29

Midfield has become a problem for Chelsea this season, which is why the club should be considering the likes of Kimmich and Napoli’s Frank Anguissa.

Romeo Lavia is still injured, which has been the story of his career at Stamford Bridge so far. Considering that, Anguissa could be a great option to come in and cover Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.

He is another one with Premier League experience after his stint at Chelsea’s west London rivals Fulham, but it is Napoli where the Cameroonian has developed into quite a good midfielder. He has managed to score five goals for Antonio Conte’s side in Serie A this season while registering a few assists.

Marco Verratti

Club: Al-Arabi

Position: Central midfielder

Age: 32

While Chelsea could find it difficult to lure Kimmich to west London, they may be able to tempt former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti.

The Italian is currently playing in Qatar, but if he wants a return to Europe, Chelsea could be a suitable destination for him.

Jonathan Tah

Club: Bayer Leverkusen

Position: Central defender

Age: 29

Like midfield, central defence is also an area that Chelsea may have to strengthen in the next transfer window, largely because of Wesley Fofana’s injury problems.

Jonathan Tah is a very experienced centre-half and helped Bayer Leverkusen to win the Bundesliga title last season undefeated.

Tah is already thought to be a target for Chelsea. Hopefully the Blues can get this one done.
