What Enzo Maresca did after Robert Sanchez’s two mistakes against Brighton

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca had to watch goalkeeper Robert Sanchez make two huge errors against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

They did not prove too costly in the end, with Chelsea still managing to win the game 4-2. Robert Sanchez has Cole Palmer to thank for that.

Palmer scored all four of Chelsea’s goals, which included a fabulous free-kick. His work could have been undone, though, if Sanchez continued to wobble.

However, that did not happen in the second half as Maresca showed his goalkeeper plenty of support. Some Chelsea fans weren’t as supportive with Sanchez, calling for him to be dropped after his two clangers.

Enzo Maresca stuck with Robert Sanchez during Chelsea vs Brighton

While several Chelsea supporters are now calling for Sanchez to be replaced, it does not look like Maresca is going to give up on the 26-year-old. He did not during the Brighton game.

According to LondonWorld, following Sanchez’s couple of mistakes, the Italian constantly called out to him and applauded when he got his passing right.

Ultimately, this does not look like a player whom Maresca is going to drop. Maresca made it known to the media last month that the Spaniard was his first-choice goalkeeper for the Premier League.

It has left Filip Jorgensen as the cup keeper, with the 22-year-old having a chance to get some minutes on Thursday when Chelsea face Gent in the Conference League.

Should Enzo Maresca drop Robert Sanchez?

Dropping Sanchez now could be counterproductive. It would possibly damage his confidence after a good start to the season.

In Chelsea’s previous top-flight games against West Ham United and Bournemouth, he was excellent. Sanchez kept two clean sheets and even saved a penalty in the Blues’ 1-0 win versus the latter.

Of course, the Spain international cannot keep making the same mistakes that he made on Saturday. It could derail Chelsea’s campaign, a campaign where they have a strong chance of finishing in the top four by the looks of things.
