£200k-a-week Chelsea player feels fans haven’t even seen 20% of his potential

Last season, Chelsea had to deal with a lot of injury problems, which probably cost them a Champions League spot in the end.

The likes of Wesley Fofana, Reece James, Christopher Nkunku and Romeo Lavia all struggled to stay fit.

Fofana and Lavia had it really bad. The former did not play a single minute of football for Chelsea, while the latter was only able to make one appearance.

Lavia’s injury issues have not gone away this term, but Fofana is fully fit again. Fofana is already a player Enzo Maresca loves.

Wesley Fofana’s message to Chelsea fans

Chelsea signed Fofana from Leicester City back in 2022 and for big money. The central defender arrived at Stamford Bridge on a £200,000-a-week contract (Spotrac), with the Blues paying £70m for his signature.

Despite joining Chelsea two years ago, Fofana has barely played because of his injury problems. As a result, he feels supporters have not seen anything close to his best, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Discussing the 23-year-old on The Here We Go podcast, the Italian journalist said: “Wesley decided to continue at Chelsea because he feels Chelsea fans didn’t see 10 or 20% of his real potential.

“He feels it will take time after the injuries, but he wants to be an important part of Chelsea’s project. He owes something to Chelsea and this is the feeling of the player and also the club.”

Fofana was interested in a move to Marseille during the summer, but in the end he decided to stay at Chelsea.

Wesley Fofana not at his best against West Ham United

Having just recovered from a serious injury, it will probably be a while before Chelsea supporters see Fofana in top form.

Fofana certainly was not in that against West Ham United over the weekend, but that is largely because the Frenchman had to play at right-back. He was the second-lowest rated Chelsea starter on Sofascore.

Malo Gusto and Reece James were both unavailable for the London derby, resulting in Fofana having to go at right-back. Chelsea will have Gusto available for tonight when they take on Barrow in the Carabao Cup, but James is still out injured.

Fofana is a centre-half with a lot of talent. Eventually, Chelsea supporters will probably see him dominating at the back, but that will only happen if he can stay fit and is utilised in his natural position.
