Chelsea have been blessed with a plethora of brilliant defensive players in recent history for their current squad to look up to.

The likes of Malo Gusto have openly shared how Thiago Silva was an inspiration to them during his time at the club.

The Brazilian left this summer after four years at the club, and Silva was named the second-best South American to ever play for Chelsea in a recent ranking.

The likes of Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana are still learning their trade despite the fact they have made strong starts to the season, although there is a long way to go before they reach the levels of some Chelsea legends.

One of those who is seen as one of the best in recent history is John Terry, who won near enough everything on offer during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Alan Shearer picks John Terry’s defending for his perfect player

Wayne Rooney named Terry his toughest ever opponent, and Chelsea players particularly those coming through the academy will no doubt see Terry as an idol for what they are looking to achieve.

Alan Shearer has recognised the former centre-back as one of the best in the game. When creating his perfect player for ‘The Rest is Football’, he selected Terry for the defensive side of the game.

Terry’s strong defensive record against Shearer

Shearer had high-praise for Terry despite only facing him six times, with the Chelsea man coming through as the Premier League’s all-time top scorer’s career was coming to an end.

The striker found the net just twice against the Blues when the Englishman was on the pitch, with Chelsea enjoying a largely positive record against Newcastle during that time.

The club legend has been vocal in his support for the current project at Chelsea, and believes there are a lot of good things to come in West London.

Terry is excited for Chelsea’s participation in the Club World Cup next summer, which they qualified for after winning the Champions League in 2021.

After working closely with the academy for a number of seasons now, he will have a great insight into the players Blues fans can look forward to seeing in action in the future.

Terry was disappointed to see Rio Ngumoha leave over the summer, with him making the move to Liverpool after not seeing a clear pathway to the top at Stamford Bridge.
