A lot of has been made about Chelsea’s transfer strategy in the last few years, so how will they approach next month’s upcoming January window?

There’s been a really aggressive approach in the transfer market under the current Chelsea owners, where they’ve invested heavily in so many quality young players.

The Blues squad now looks very different to a couple of years ago. With Enzo Maresca now in charge as the head coach, there is obvious progress on the pitch and reason for supporters to be optimistic.

Chelsea urged to spend big again

According to Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison, Chelsea still need to go out and make a few more signings to complete their squad. He would like to see several more defensive additions, plus the acquisition of another striker to compete with Nicolas Jackson.

When asked about Chelsea’s chances in the title race this season, Morrison suggested that Chelsea need more reinforcements in the New Year during the January window. He told Sky Sports: “I still think Chelsea need to spend. They need a world-class goalkeeper and a few defenders…

“I still think even though he’s been outstanding and brilliant, another centre-forward to challenge Nicolas Jackson. I know Christopher Nkunku can come off the bench, but I don’t see Nkunku as a natural number nine. I think he’s best dropping in little pockets, he’s a 10. But he can’t get in the 10 because we’ve got one of the best players around in the Premier League in Cole Palmer.”

Speaking back in November, Stephen Warnock agreed Chelsea need another goalkeeper and centre-back before they can win the division title.

The Blues currently sit second in the Premier League table, but they’re seven points adrift of leaders Liverpool after Boxing Day’s disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to local rivals Fulham.

Are Chelsea expected to be busy in January?

While some people may be urging the Blues to go splash the cash in the New Year, there’s speculation that it could be a quiet window in terms of incomings at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are not planning to sign a striker in January. Apparently, the only way they’d change their minds is if they received an extraordinary transfer offer for Christopher Nkunku, or if Nicolas Jackson picked up a big injury.

Elsewhere, Chelsea have no plans of signing a defender when the transfer window reopens mid-season.

The fact that Maresca is rotating so frequently this campaign means there’s less stress on his squad, but things would be a lot different next season if they were in the Champions League.
