Chelsea’s Joao Felix explains what his father did which completely changed his attitude

Chelsea forward Joao Felix has shared how his father has really helped him in his career.

In terms of technical ability, Joao Felix is probably one of the most gifted players in the world.

Chelsea spent £45m on him during the summer after Atletico Madrid had paid more than £100m for his services back in 2019.

Yet for all of his talent, things have not been straightforward for the 25-year-old. Felix played in Chelsea’s win against Leicester City last weekend, which was his first Premier League start of the season.

Joao Felix felt untouchable

One issue that Felix seemed to have at one point was overconfidence. According to the player himself, he used to feel “untouchable”.

However, the Portuguese revealed on a podcast that his father helped to set him straight.

Speaking on Geracao 90, Felix said: “To be honest, at first I think [I stayed grounded] but then I think I went through a phase. Even with the support and upbringing I had, I am aware that I went through a phase where I felt I could do anything. I think that is normal, given everything that happened which was all a bit quickly.

“Honestly, [the price tag] never crosses my mind. Only if someone tells me about it. I’m not in bed before going to sleep thinking that I cost €126 million. I went through a period where I felt untouchable, but it was over quickly. I opened my eyes and others opened my eyes right away and that ended quickly because my father, if he has to say something, he says it. Whether it’s good or bad.”

After making his first league start of the campaign at the King Power Stadium last Saturday, Felix will be hoping to make his second against Aston Villa on Sunday. Chelsea fans were really impressed with Felix’s Leicester display.

How does Enzo Maresca feel about Joao Felix?

In the past, Felix’s father has clearly felt that the Portugal international has needed to be more humble.

Fast forward to now, though, and his manager does not seem to have any problems with him. In fact, Enzo Maresca recently praised Felix.

“Joao did fantastic [in the break], but Joao is doing fantastic with us since day one,” Maresca said when discussing Felix in a press conference.

Had the Chelsea boss not had so many other attacking options, Felix would probably be starting for the Blues.

However, with the likes of Cole Palmer and Pedro Neto around, getting into the Chelsea team has proven difficult for Felix.

It is a long campaign, though, with plenty of games left to play. And as Chelsea supporters have already seen this season with the likes of Reece James and Romeo Lavia, injuries do happen. Anything happens to Palmer, for example, and Felix could quickly find himself as the starting No.10 at Stamford Bridge.
