Gary Neville has discussed both Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen following Chelsea’s 2-1 win against West Ham United on Monday.

After a costly error in Chelsea‘s 3-1 defeat to Manchester City, Enzo Maresca decided to drop Robert Sanchez for his side’s latest outing.

In came Filip Jorgensen, who was unable to keep a clean sheet but still helped the Blues to earn all three points.

Overall, Jorgensen did quite well on the night, but Neville has a warning for the 22-year-old.

Gary Neville expecting tougher tests to come for Filip Jorgensen

Neville also thought that Jorgensen did not do too much wrong on Monday, though he did feel that the Denmark U21 international was a bit nervy at times.

For the Manchester United legend, it is still too early to tell if Jorgensen can successfully replace Sanchez in goal, while he expects him to face much harder tests in the future.

Speaking about Chelsea’s goalkeeper situation on The Gary Neville Podcast, he said: “It’s too early to say. I think there were a couple of nervy moments, which is natural for a young goalkeeper coming in under so much pressure, having seen his teammate who he trains with every single day.

“Goalkeepers train so closely. I know all football players do but goalkeepers go out together and work together. They don’t want to see their mate suffer, as much as they want the chance themselves. And the pressure that will have built on Jorgensen, you could see in the first half.

“It’s been quite a comfortable night for him. I think the tougher tests are to come where obviously he’ll be put under a lot more pressure and we’ll see what happens then.”

It was a big call for Maresca to drop Sanchez after backing him all season. However, the decision to axe Sanchez was backed by Gianfranco Zola.

Chelsea could sign Gregor Kobel to replace Robert Sanchez

Having not done too much wrong in Chelsea’s victory over West Ham, it would be a surprise if Jorgensen lost his spot in the team.

Ultimately, Jorgensen could now have the chance to nail down the position between the sticks. Fail to do that, and Chelsea could sign Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel to replace Sanchez.

It is being reported that Chelsea could bid £58m for Kobel this summer, which may be enough to get the 27-year-old out of Dortmund.

Jorgensen and Sanchez could now be playing for their futures at Stamford Bridge. But having only arrived from Villarreal in the 2024 summer transfer window, Chelsea definitely need to stick with Jorgensen for a bit longer and give him more opportunities in goal.
