Chelsea are very keen on signing Morgan Rogers this summer, and are trying to use the presence of Xabi Alonso as manager as a factor to convince him of the move.

The Blues have laid the groundwork down for signing Rogers for a number of months now, although he is of interest to a number of top clubs this summer.

So far, Rogers has not rejected a move to Chelsea, even though the Blues cannot offer him the opportunity to play in Europe next season.

Chelsea using Xabi Alonso to convince Morgan Rogers to join them

Despite this, the Blues became a far more attractive landing spot for any player when they announced that Xabi Alonso would be taking over as manager for next season.

It seems that Chelsea are trying to use this to their advantage when it comes to Rogers. According to Simon Phillips, the Blues are using the aura of their new manager to convince him to join.

He said on his Substack: “SPTC Sources have heard that Chelsea are using Xabi Alonso and dithering interested clubs, to try and convince Rogers to join them.

“Both Arsenal and Manchester United have been slow in following up their interest in Rogers and are ‘dithering’ on it, giving other interested clubs a chance to move in – Chelsea bring one of them.

“Arsenal have been ahead of Chelsea in the ‘race’ to sign Rogers – this was down to Chelsea’s poor season and poor end to the season, missing out on Europe etc. The players’ preference was/is Arsenal. But then Alonso came in and Chelsea used that to try and persuade Rogers to join them, reigniting talks with the 23-year-old England international.

“At this point, Chelsea are still trying to convince Rogers but obviously he is now focused on the World Cup with England. I’m not saying we wont hear anything more whilst this is on, but some players prefer to only focus on this competition when they are involved in it, rather than transfer moves.”

Chelsea quietly confident of signing Rogers

It has even been reported that Chelsea are readying a £90m bid to sign Rogers this summer, although that does not meet Villa’s current demands.

Despite the other sides being mentioned as interested, the Blues can offer Rogers an immediate starting spot in a number of positions.

They see this as an advantage over their rivals, and will no doubt be banking on the public friendship between the England man and Cole Palmer.

The current Chelsea star will not be with the Three Lions in North America, although Rogers will be looking to make an impression, starting with their opening group stage game against Croatia.
