Wayne Bridge claims it’s “crazy” that Chelsea need to go out and sign another left-back when you look at their squad.
Blues head coach Mauricio Pochettino is juggling several different problems this season, including in the left-back position.
For context, Chelsea do own Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella as two senior left-back options. It’s just very unfortunate that both have missed most of the season so far through injury.
Levi Colwill has stepped in as cover at left-back for the most part, but the centre-half looks very unnatural in the role. Speaking via talkSPORT this week, Jason Cundy insisted that Colwill’s simply not a left-back.

Wayne Bridge can’t believe that Chelsea find themselves in a position where they need a new left-back.
“It’s crazy really, when you look at the money they have spent, that they need to get another left back,” Bridge told The Mirror.
“Colwill is good but he’s more of a centre back and he’s not going to overlap a lot. And it didn’t go too well on Tuesday night. They’d rather Lewis Hall or [Tino] Livramento back now. It is crazy when you talk about the names and they don’t have a left back. It’s madness.”
Chelsea need a new left-back
If Chilwell and Cucurella were both fit, we doubt this conversation would be happening. But you could still argue the club needs a world-class left-back adding to their XI as part of the long-term plan.
Our suggestion is for Chelssea to play Malo Gusto at left-back for the time being. They should then reassess the full-back position at the end of the season when the summer window comes around.
Journalist Simon Phillips reported via Substack back in November that Chelsea are keeping an eye on a potential move for Bayern Munich’s 23-year-old defender Alphonso Davies.
