Jason Cundy has explained the significant change he’s noticed in Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez in recent times.
Enzo Fernandez, 24, is remarkably one of the more senior players in a very young and inexperienced Chelsea squad. In fact, he usually wears the armband when club captain Reece James isn’t on the pitch.
The Argentine star does carry the weight of being a World Cup winner and costing the Blues £107m to sign from Benfica just over two years ago.
Chelsea fans think Fernandez is crucial after he impressed in Tuesday night’s 4-0 Premier League victory at home to Southampton.

Jason Cundy has spotted Enzo Fernandez growing into a leader at Chelsea
Jason Cundy thinks that Chelsea ace Fernandez is displaying the body language of a leader on the pitch.
The central midfielder, who’s an ever-present alongside Moises Caicedo in the centre of the park, is definitely growing in stature.
When discussing Chelsea’s Fernandez, Cundy told talkSPORT: “There is something about his body language at the moment. Even though it’s been a bad run, he has stood up. There are leadership qualities in every game that I see that he’s now displaying on the pitch.
“We don’t have a huge amount of leaders in the squad, but I’m looking at him now. I saw him after the Aston Villa game, how broken he was, he was absolutely distraught at the fact that we didn’t pick up at least a point that we deserved. There is something about his performances now… He is maturing every game.”
Back in April 2023, Frank Lampard called Fernandez a “leader” after coaching him for a brief spell at Chelsea. The South American midfielder has definitely taken strides forward in his game now as well.
Even when Romeo Lavia does return to full fitness, Blues manager Enzo Maresca would surely still have to find room for Fernandez in the best starting XI.

Enzo Fernandez standing up during difficult period
While Chelsea’s results may have been up and down so far in 2025, Fernandez has been one of the few individuals in the side still battling away and regularly showing moments of their best football.

Fernandez is trying to lead by example with his own busy displays in the midfield. Also, we agree that he’s a visibly passionate player on the pitch and is constantly trying to motivate teammates around him.
Most importantly, Fernandez is enjoying a very solid individual campaign, scoring four goals and creating eight assists across all competitions in 31 games so far.
James organised a team bonding meal at Chelsea recently to try bring the squad closer together for the end-of-season run in. While James appears to be leading off the pitch, Fernandez is the vocal general on it.
