Jason Cundy rips into Chelsea defender who was ‘too passive’ in Ipswich defeat, calls him ‘sloppy’

Chelsea’s season so far has mainly been filled with positive moments, but yesterday’s defeat to Ipswich Town was covered in mistakes.

The Blues suffered a 2-0 away loss at Ipswich in the Premier League, which is a really frustrating way to end 2024.

Chelsea sits fourth in the league table at the halfway stage in the season, largely because of the positive impact of Enzo Maresca as the head coach. However, he’s hit his first real bump in the road after a few negative results over the festive period.

Maresca claimed Chelsea must do better after watching his side fall to a disappointing loss away to Ipswich.

Jason Cundy rips into Chelsea defender Axel Disasi

Jason Cundy wasn’t impressed with Chelsea’s Axel Disasi against Ipswich after his mistake led to a goal.

Ipswich were 1-0 in front at half time after Liam Delap’s spot-kick. However, the hosts doubled their advantage early in the second period when former Blues winger Omari Hutchinson scored.

Unfortunately, Chelsea defender Disasi lost possession on the halfway line, which set off the Ipswich move for their second goal. The 26-year-old Frenchman tried to get back into position to help out, but he couldn’t get a block on Hutchinson’s strike.

Cundy said via Chelsea’s official app (9pm, 30 December): “It’s a gift from Disasi… Disasi, can he do better as well closing down Omari Hutchinson? Make sure he doesn’t get his shot away. Too passive. It’s a lovely finish. Talk about trying to hand them a leg up. Disasi is culpable. It’s a sloppy ball giving it away.”

Disasi earned a 4/10 in Chelsea’s player ratings against Ipswich after his poor individual contribution.

He was recalled into the starting line-up to play at right-back in Monday night’s game, but he blow the opportunity to impress. It’s definitely noticeable that the central defender looks awkward when he’s asked to cover at full-back.

Paul Robinson comments on Axel Disasi mistake

Paul Robinson, the former England international and now BBC pundit, was equally critical of Disasi’s error versus Ipswich moments before the Hutchinson goal.

Robinson told BBC Sport: (9:03pm, 30 December): “Axel Disasi, what are you doing? You’ve just cost your team.”

Disasi is one of the Chelsea players who could push for a January exit, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens with his future next month.

It was just his fifth Premier League appearance of the season this week against Ipswich. It’s pretty evident that he’s quite far down the defensive pecking order right now, so perhaps an exit makes sense for all parties in the New Year.
