Jody Morris says Chelsea cannot go to the ‘next level’ with £25m player at Stamford Bridge

Fans will now be wondering how far Chelsea’s group can go after a statement performance against Paris Saint-Germain.

Chelsea wrapped up a successful tournament at the Club World Cup on Sunday, lifting the major trophy after thrashing PSG 3-0 in style in the final.

Of course, the Blues still have a lot more to achieve to get back to their glory years. Enzo Maresca is definitely taking the side at Stamford Bridge in the right direction after just a year in the manager’s dugout, though.

Chelsea’s players have been told to stay humble after their recent success, winning the Conference League and the Club World Cup, because there is still a lot of work to do.

Jody Morris suggests Chelsea need to replace Robert Sanchez

Jody Morris, the former Chelsea player and assistant manager, still isn’t convinced by Blues goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. In fact, he’s argued the club needs to sign an upgrade on the £25m gloveman (BBC) to go to the “next level” as a team.

When discussing Sanchez’s performance in the Club World Cup final, Morris told talkSPORT: “It was an accomplished performance from him (Sanchez), which obviously isn’t something we’ve said a lot this season.”

He was then asked if Chelsea still need to improve on the goalkeeper area, Morris responded: “Yeah, without a doubt. If you want to get to the next level where we are hoping to be at… The fact we’ve gone for a keeper before this tournament even started shows you we are trying to improve in that area.”

Without a doubt, Sanchez put in one of his best-ever Chelsea performances to help the team win the Club World Cup. However, John Obi Mikel agrees Chelsea still must sign a goalkeeper despite watching Sanchez shine in net against PSG.

French media raved about Sanchez after his heroics in the Club World Cup, where he made some magical saves, but he’s been guilty of blowing hot then cold during his Blues career so far.

Enzo Maresca wants an upgrade on Robert Sanchez

The truth is Sanchez has performed pretty impressively in the last few months, particularly in the Club World Cup final, but the speculation about his future continues in the transfer rumour mill.

Reports in June claimed that Maresca wants to sign an upgrade on Sanchez before the summer window closes because he’s lost trust in him.

He temporarily lost his starting position to Filip Jorgensen during the 2024/25 campaign, but did regain it to finish the season as the club’s first-choice keeper.

Despite strong transfer links this summer, Chelsea target and French goalkeeper Mike Maignan has decided to stay at AC Milan. Therefore, it will be interesting to see where the Blues next.
