La Liga expert delivers verdict on Samu Omorodion’s reported move to Chelsea

Chelsea will hope that one day a striker picks up the reigns left behind by legendary figures Didier Drogba and Diego Costa.

Blues supporters are absolutely desperate to see their main centre-forward scoring 20-plus goals a season, something they’ve been starved of in recent years.

In fairness, Nicolas Jackson did hit 17 goals across all competitions during his debut campaign at Stamford Bridge last year. He’s about to have some new fresh competition in attack, though.

Samu Omorodion, who’s just 20, is reportedly on his way to West London this summer.

Respected journalist Fabrizio Romano reports via X on Thursday that Chelsea have agreed a £34.5m deal for Atletico Madrid’s Omorodion. Apparently, the Spanish forward will undergo a medical in Paris on Thursday as well.

Terry Gibson on imminent Chelsea signing Samu Omorodion

Terry Gibson, who’s a La Liga expert, has delivered his verdict on Omorodion’s reported move to Stamford Bridge.

He’s been left quite shocked by Chelsea’s decision to go after the 20-year-old youngster.

When asked about Omorodion’s imminent switch to Chelsea, Gibson told Sky Sports Premier League: “I’m incredibly surprised by this, to be honest… I find it incredible Chelsea have lumped in straight away.

“They’re buying potential. Centre-forwards do cost a lot of money, they’ll be hoping that in the future €30m-odd they’re paying Atletico is going to be money well spent. But it’s a tough one to call.

“I don’t want to be too critical of a young player, but the increase in his valuation on the back of eight goals for Alaves, where he lost his place at the end of the season, is hard to believe.”

What Chelsea fans should expect from Samu Omorodion

There’s always some excitement and expectancy when any club signs a No 9, but Chelsea fans shouldn’t put too much pressure on Omorodion from day one when he officially joins.

He’s a very raw centre-forward that’s only had one full season so far in the Spanish top flight. His record in the La Liga division is eight goals in 35 matches, with all but one appearance for Alaves last year.

Atletico signed him last summer before sending him straight to Alaves, so he’s set to leave Madrid without ever playing for them.

If Chelsea supporters thought Jackson was raw last year, it could be eye-opening for them when Omorodion plays for the first time because he’s still at the very infancy of his career.
