Reports have claimed that Chelsea loanee Levi Colwill is very close to being handed his first call-up to the England national team.

According to The Athletic, Gareth Southgate is considering the 19-year-old for his upcoming fixtures against Italy and Ukraine.

Colwill is currently on loan at Brighton, where he has had to be patient to be handed his chance to impress.

However, since breaking into Roberto de Zerbi’s side he has looked irreplaceable in a side that continue to impress this season since allowing Graham Potter to leave for Chelsea.

There is perhaps no surprise that Chelsea remain interested in a number of their first team players. Reports have claimed that they are planning a bid to sign Moises Caicedo this month.

One player they won’t need to sign though is Colwill. He is currently set to return to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.

This was close to not being the case though. With Thomas Tuchel in charge, reports claimed the club were happy to cash in on the promising defender.

While his good performances were in the Championship last season, he has made the appropriate step up to performing at the highest level in the top flight.

This looks like it could be set to reap its rewards. The Athletic have claimed that the teenager is in contention for his first international call-up.

The defence is an intriguing area at Chelsea at the moment. Yesterday saw the impressive debut of new signing Benoit Badiashile.

He started instead of Kalidou Koulibaly against Crystal Palace, with the Senegal international failing to reach the levels expected since his move last summer.

With the likes of Wesley Fofana and Trevoh Chalobah also in the squad, there are a number of young options available, with Colwill certainly good enough to compete on that level.
