Ever since the January window, Chelsea have been loosely linked with Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall, and now, David Ornstein has an update on the Swedish star’s future.
Chelsea are yet to make any new signings this summer, while the likes of Tottenham and Man United push ahead with new arrivals. The Blues could be waiting for Xabi Alonso to officially take office.
While he and his assistants have visited Cobham on numerous occasions, Alonso will officially start calling the shots at Chelsea on July 1. But it is believed Alonso has been heavily involved in transfer talks.
CHELSEA’S FIXTURES ARE ANNOUNCED!
With the summer window in full swing, Chelsea seem to be linked with a new player every day. On Sunday, the Blues have been touted with Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi and Roma midfielder Manu Kone.
But another player linked with Chelsea is Tottenham midfielder Bergvall, with reports suggesting Chelsea scouts have been watching him at the World Cup – even though the Spurs star has not started.
Lucas Bergvall informs Tottenham he wants to leave Spurs
Back in February 2024, Tottenham completed a move for Bergvall with the player eventually joining the club that summer. In his two years at Spurs, the Sweden midfielder has played 78 times for Tottenham.

But Roberto De Zerbi’s appointment has seen Bergvall drop down the pecking order, with the likes of Conor Gallagher, Joao Palhinha and Archie Gray preferred. Now, Bergvall has decided on his future.
According to David Ornstein on The Athletic, Bergvall has told Tottenham that he now wants to pursue a new challenge. Chelsea were initially linked in January, with a £40m fee supposedly enough to get him.
Why signing Lucas Bergvall makes no sense for Chelsea…
Bergvall is undoubtedly an enormous talent. A player who has ambition too, clearly identifying that his pathway into Tottenham’s senior side is blocked. He could do with a move in the coming months.
Whether Tottenham agree to a permanent sale remains to be seen. If De Zerbi does not have Bergvall in his immediate plans, they would surely prefer to send him on loan rather than selling him permanently.
Reece James as a central midfielder or a right-back under Xabi Alonso?👀
The million pound question!
But for Chelsea, it makes no sense. First of all, Chelsea need more experienced players and while Bergvall is proven in the Premier League, he remains just 20 years of age. Chelsea do not really need midfielders.
If the Blues do enter the market for a midfielder, it will be a goalscoring replacement for Enzo Fernandez. Bergvall is not that player, scoring just two goals for Spurs during all of his 78 league and cup games.
There have been reports suggesting Chelsea’s interest in Bergvall is not actually the case, even if he wants to leave Spurs. BlueCo must do the right thing, ignore the hype of Bergvall, and sign ready-made players.
