What Chelsea’s owners really think about the club’s transfer strategy

Chelsea’s transfer strategy under Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital has come in for huge criticism.

Since being taken over by Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali‘s Clearlake, Chelsea have largely targeted young players who have room to grow.

For example, during the summer transfer window, the Blues signed 18-year-old striker Marc Guiu from Barcelona.

Guiu was the only centre-forward who joined the club, with Chelsea missing out on Victor Osimhen. For many, that is where the issue lies. Instead of signing a proven No.9, Chelsea have ended up with an inexperienced striker.

Clearlake Capital confident transfer strategy at Chelsea will pay off

Some transfers at Chelsea under their current ownership have quite clearly not worked out.

The club are still waiting for Mykhailo Mudryk to deliver, while the jury is still out on Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, two midfielders who cost more than £100m each.

For now, though, it does not look like Clearlake want to change anything and have faith that their policy of signing young players will eventually pay dividends.

Speaking about Clearlake on his Substack, journalist Simon Phillips wrote: “We’ve been told their intentions and ambitions have not changed and they remain focused on that [making Chelsea a top European side again] and have big plans for the club. They also believe their vision of buying young will pay off.”

There is tension between Boehly and Clearlake right now, which could see the two parties try and buy each other out.

Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke prove it can work

Not too many people were aware of Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke when Chelsea signed them.

However, the two young attackers have proven to be good additions to Chelsea’s squad, especially the former.

Palmer and Madueke have both been in fine form in this early part of the season, with Palmer already notching up five goal contributions and Madueke scoring a hat-trick against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

What the two have shown is that Chelsea’s current transfer strategy can work. However, if the club want to be successful again, then there probably needs to be a bit of balance. As well as signing players with huge potential, the Blues also need footballers who are guaranteed to make an impact now.

Palmer, for example, was never that, having been overlooked at former club Manchester City. Where would Chelsea be now if that gamble had not have paid off? It is scary to imagine if you are a Chelsea fan.
