Chelsea have established themselves as trailblazers in a number of ways since Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali took over the running of the club.
A lot has been made of the near £2billion spent by the club since they came in, however Enzo Maresca has a quality squad at his disposal that supporters are beginning to see the best out of.
The additions of Cole Palmer, Marc Cucurella and Moises Caicedo have handed Chelsea genuine contenders for best players in the Premier League in their positions, and they have looked to plug gaps already this summer.
Liam Delap and Joao Pedro have already been brought in by the club to strengthen the attack, and reports have claimed that Maresca wants a new goalkeeper available for next season.
A lot of criticism has been thrown Boehly’s way for how the club have operated over the past few years. Amongst others, Jamie Carragher has been critical of Boehly and his methods.
Premier League clubs admitting they need to learn from Chelsea
However, it seems Premier League clubs are starting to sit up and take notice of what the Blues are doing. David Ornstein has claimed that he has heard of other sides now starting to recognise they need to adapt some of Chelsea’s methods themselves.
He said to The Athletic FC podcast: “People say they [Chelsea] are stockpiling in certain positions, but that might look very differently when players are shifted.
“There are clubs that I speak to who say, look, Chelsea were mocked in certain quarters for the long contract, their attempts to bring the wage bill down, and what appeared to be crazy recruitment, but then now looking at it and saying, actually, we need to take a bit of a leaf out there.
“Naturally, mistakes will be made within that. There’ll be experiments that don’t work out. There’ll be many players that do. Some of them won’t work initially, but will longer term.
“You’ve seen like Caicedo blossoming now, for example, and so there’s a bit of trial and error in it, and when you’re signing players who have market value, and I guess with this sort of American mentality and the need to trade in this PSR era, which more clubs are learning now, it is not something Chelsea are afraid to do.”
Chelsea’s biggest loophole being exposed by other clubs
In order to complete the mass player turnover that has been taking place at Stamford Bridge, they have needed to stay on the right side of PSR.
Chelsea sold their women’s team, and this tactic was not voted against by Premier League sides at a recent meeting.
Now, Aston Villa are following suit, potentially putting Chelsea’s pursuit of Morgan Rogers out of reach as they look set to bank a healthy sum.
Do not be surprised to see fellow top clubs in England follow suit and begin to make Boehly look somewhat of a pioneer in his ways.
