Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has been widely tipped recently with the vacant managerial position at Championship club Coventry City.
Frank Lampard, 46, is rightly considered one of the true greats of Chelsea’s history. In his 13 years at Stamford Bridge during his playing career, the midfield star scored 211 goals in 648 Blues appearances.
The England icon returned to Chelsea in 2019 for a stint as the first-team manager, which lasted 84 games. He even returned for a brief spell as the caretaker boss in 2023, too.
Lampard was considered for the England job earlier this year, but former Blues manager Thomas Tuchel ended up getting the position. Now, he’s linked with a potential return to management in England’s second tier.

Frank Lampard still very close with Chelsea officials
According to journalist Simon Phillips via his Substack, Lampard has a ‘very good relationship’ with both Chelsea owners and the sporting directors.
It is explained that the 46-year-old coach, who’s currently out of work, is a candidate interviewing for the Coventry job this week.
Apparently, if Lampard becomes the Coventry boss, he’s likely to look at Chelsea for potential transfer reinforcements. It is believed that he admires some of the Blues academy players and he’s maintained a good relationship with the club.
Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, run the club’s transfer strategy. In theory, a healthy relationship with Lampard should help any potential transfer business with Coventry further down the line.
Lampard wanted to take charge at Stoke City last year, but he’s not been in the manager’s dugout since his temporary spell with Chelsea in 2023.
Which Chelsea players could be a good fit for Coventry?
There’s a lot of youngsters in the Chelsea academy that could benefit from a stint on loan in the Championship, so perhaps everyone should be rooting for Lampard to nail his interview and get the Coventry job.
Chelsea youngster Tyrique George could be great at Coventry. Elsewhere, it would be fantastic to see other Blues talents such as Kiano Dyer, Harvey Vale and Deivid Washington get minutes out on loan.
It’s increasingly more difficult for youngsters to break into the Blues first-team squad because of the huge competition, so the loan market becomes even more important for development.
