Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez may have dropped the biggest hint yet that he will not be on the move this month.

The 21-year-old was strongly linked with a move to Chelsea at the turn of the year.

Reports even claimed that the Blues had reached the final details stage, with it almost being confirmed that he would become the club’s record signing.

However, later claims suggested that they were actually far less willing to pay the fee requested by Benfica, and instead sent an offer which was not enough to complete the signing.

Fernandez was seemingly very keen on the switch to Stamford Bridge, with him even risking breaking team orders and missing training to try and force through the move.

However, last night may have proven a change in his motive.

Fernandez hints he is staying

The midfielder scored for the Portuguese champions last night in their 2-0 win over Varzim in the cup.

When celebrating, the 21-year-old made a point of showing to the fans that he is happy to be at the club, repeatedly beating his chest whilst pointing to the turf to imply he’s going nowhere.

There have been reports that the club are beginning to prioritise other targets as they attempt to strengthen their midfield options.

It has been claimed they have this month stepped up their interest in Moises Caicedo, who could be available for a slashed price from Brighton.

Their interest in a midfielder stem from the potential that there could be an exodus in the position this month.

Both N’golo Kante and Jorginho have contracts that expire at the end of the season. At this stage, there are no guarantees that either extend their stay at Stamford Bridge.

There have been recent reports that the Frenchman is a bit closer than his teammate to committing his future to the club.
