Chelsea considering move for ‘special’ 27-year-old who is unhappy at his current club

Chelsea are still considering a move to sign Mike Maignan from AC Milan this summer despite Mauricio Pochettino being content with his goalkeeping options.

That is according to the Telegraph.

So, what is the latest on Mike Maignan and Chelsea? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the Blues are said to have three goalkeepers on their shortlist this summer amid doubts over Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy – the latter of whom is now moving to Saudi Arabia.

Those are Maignan, Andre Onana and Diogo Costa.

Pochettino is believed to be willing to use Kepa as his No.1 next season – so he is presumably unlikely to push hard for Maignan – although Chelsea are still considering a swoop for the France international.

There is currently chaos at AC Milan after Paolo Maldini was bizarrely sacked from his role as Director of Football, and the club’s poster boy Sandro Tonali was sold to Newcastle.

That led to La Repubblica claiming that Maignan – who Clarence Seedorf called “special” – is now unhappy at the San Siro, and is thinking about leaving.

Interest in the 27-year-old Frenchman comes after he enjoyed an outstanding season in between the sticks for the Italian giants, keeping ten clean sheets in 29 appearances while conceding just 27 goals.

Maignan will be expensive for Chelsea

If Chelsea do decide to make a move for Maignan, the Blues should expect to spend a fair bit.

Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports recently revealed on Substack that AC Milan will demand at least £73m to sell their No.16 this summer, following his emergence as one of Europe’s best glovesmen.

That is a huge amount for a goalkeeper – in fact, it would even surpass the record fee, which Chelsea hold after spending £72m on Kepa.

In that respect, we doubt a move will happen, unless the Blues continue to receive huge fees for fringe players and end up balancing their finances so well that a swoop for Maignan becomes possible.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as – despite claims that Pochettino is happy with Kepa – links to the likes of Maignan, Onana and Costa simply won’t go away.
