Chelsea could be tempted to sign 30-year-old Premier League goalkeeper instead of Aaron Ramsdale

Chelsea signed two new goalkeepers in the summer, Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic.

However, Chelsea are currently without the former because of injury and journalist Dean Jones has now told GiveMeSport that he thinks the Blues could be tempted to move for a shot-stopper at another Premier League club.

In Sanchez’s absence, Petrovic has come in and has not done a terrible job for Mauricio Pochettino‘s side.

He was the hero in their Carabao Cup quarter-final triumph over Newcastle United, saving Matt Ritchie’s spot kick in a penalty shootout to send his team into the next round of the competition.

Chelsea could knock on the door for Alphonse Areola

Jones has doubts about Chelsea signing Aaron Ramsdale, who has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, but says he would not be shocked if the Blues made a move for another Premier League goalkeeper when the transfer window opens, West Ham United’s Alphonse Areola.

Discussing Chelsea’s goalkeeper situation, the journalist said: “The signs that I’ve had are that Arsenal would not loan Ramsdale to a rival, particularly someone like Chelsea and could Chelsea go and buy Aaron Ramsdale? I’m not so sure.

“There are a few other goalkeeper situations opening up around the Premier League that might become tempting. You look at Areola for example. Suddenly Lukasz Fabianski is back in favour, and I think if Areola was suddenly frustrated about his situation at West Ham, it wouldn’t surprise me if someone like Chelsea was to knock on the door.”

Should Chelsea make a move for Alphonse Areola?

No. If the Blues are going to sign a new shot-stopper, then he should really be a clear upgrade on Sanchez. Would 30-year-old Areola be that? Probably not.

Sanchez has actually not done that badly this season. He has a save percentage of 70.5% (FBref). It puts him in the top 10 goalkeepers in the Premier League for that statistic and not too far behind Areola (72%).

Again, the Spain international is currently out injured, but Chelsea would just be better off sticking with Petrovic, who made a real statement against Newcastle with his penalty save.

Today’s game against Wolverhampton Wanderers, then, could be a big one for the Serbian. He can probably quash talk of a new goalie coming to Stamford Bridge in January with a solid performance between the sticks.
