Chelsea could now face competition from Bayern Munich to sign £42m player

Chelsea and Bayern Munich could go toe-to-toe to sign one striker next summer.

While Christopher Nkunku can play up front, Chelsea do not have a natural centre-forward to cover for Nicolas Jackson.

As for Bayern Munich, they need an alternative to Harry Kane, who has scored 11 goals in just 10 Bundesliga matches this season.

Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres and Lille’s Jonathan David are a couple of strikers who have been linked to Chelsea. David has also been linked to Juventus.

Bayern Munich have Jonathan David on shortlist

Earlier this month, it was reported that Chelsea have been looking at David as they consider bringing in another No.9.

Since then, journalist Florian Plettenberg has claimed that Bayern also have the 24-year-old on their radar.

On X, he wrote: “FC Bayern have Jonathan David on their list and are closely monitoring his situation.”

Lille wanted £42m for David during the summer, but they are now at risk of losing him for nothing, as his contract continues to run down.

Jonathan David vs Nicolas Jackson

Right now, Jackson is Chelsea’s first-choice striker and has not done a bad job this season.

In the 11 Premier League games that the 23-year-old has played, he has scored six goals and provided three assists.

David has managed one more goal than Jackson but is yet to register an assist.

All in all, David would probably not be an upgrade on Jackson. Even so, it could still be worth bringing him to Stamford Bridge.

He could end up costing Chelsea nothing, with his contract expiring in 2025, and Nkunku’s future has come into doubt.

Chelsea could sell Nkunku — who is not even a natural No.9 anyway — and that would open up a space in Enzo Maresca’s squad.

If Chelsea want to sign David, though, it looks like they could have to see off competition from Bayern. The Canada international may not want to move to the Allianz Arena to play back-up to Kane, so that could give Chelsea an advantage here.
