Why Premier League clubs decided not to sign £42m striker in the summer as fresh Chelsea links emerge

Chelsea could sign a centre-forward from one Champions League club in the new year.

However, it looks like some of Chelsea‘s Premier League rivals had reservations about him in the last transfer window.

Signing a new striker could become a priority for the Blues, if it is not already. It has been claimed that Christopher Nkunku is worried about his situation at Chelsea right now, with the 26-year-old having made just one start in the Premier League this season.

If he goes, then Chelsea will definitely have to bring in a new No.9, otherwise Enzo Maresca will be left short up front.

Premier League clubs have concerns about Lille’s Jonathan David

In their pursuit of a new striker during the summer, Jonathan David was one name linked to Chelsea.

Nothing happened in the end, but it appears that the Lille star has come back onto their radar. It has been reported that both Juventus and Chelsea are interested in signing David in the new year.

According to GiveMeSport, the 24-year-old was available for £42m in the previous transfer window, but Premier League clubs opted against making a move for him because of concerns regarding his reliability in the final third.

David actually finished last season with 26 goals in all competitions, but perhaps those Premier League clubs feared that he would not have been able to transfer that form over to England.

Jonathan David and Viktor Gyokeres in form

Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres is another striker whom Chelsea are thought to be interested in.

Chelsea have had their eyes on Gyokeres this season, with the 26-year-old in incredible form right now. He scored a hat-trick against Manchester City on Tuesday night, which took his number of goals in the Champions League to five.

In total, Gyokeres has netted 23 times this term. David has also performed in the Champions League, scoring in his side’s recent 1-1 draw with Juventus, which was his sixth of the tournament (including qualifiers).

It is no surprise to hear that Chelsea are looking at both strikers at this moment in time.
