It is now well-known that Lucas Bergvall has informed Tottenham he wants to leave the North London club this summer amid reports Chelsea are keen – but will Chelsea move?
Currently with Graham Potter’s Sweden side at the World Cup, Bergvall has endured a tricky 12 months in which he has failed to break into the Spurs XI. On the other hand, Archie Gray has been more productive.
Who do you want to see Chelsea sign for each of these positions? 👀
These are the FOUR areas the club have identified for this summer…
The signing of Conor Gallagher has pushed Bergvall down the pecking order. Often, Roberto De Zerbi prefers proven, more experienced players like Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur in central midfield.
Chelsea have been linked with Bergvall for a while, initially showing interest in January. Reports have since suggested Chelsea scouts were watching Bergvall at the World Cup, though he’s failed to start so far.
Chelsea fans react to Lucas Bergvall exit reports
Now Bergvall is keen to leave, it possibly opens the door for the Blues should they remain interested. But they will not be alone in pursuit of the midfielder. The Athletic say Nottingham Forest want to sign him.
Central midfield, as things stand, is not a priority for Chelsea but that changes if Enzo Fernandez leaves. Romeo Lavia could also go, with Monaco making a bid. Is Bergvall the answer? Fans have had their say.
The theme among Chelsea fans is the same, that Bergvall doesn’t really improve the midfield. One posted “This guy is mid”, while another questioned him: “Do you think he can bring an impact to the midfield?”
Another Chelsea fan, posed with signing Bergvall, simply said, “No thank you.” Another said that if he doesn’t play for Spurs, why sign him: “His own team don’t want to play, tells you all you need to know.”
Chelsea do not need to sign Lucas Bergvall this summer
With Andrey Santos, Moises Caicedo, Lavia, Essugo and possibly Reece James considered as central midfielders by Alonso, Chelsea are not in desperate need of a new midfielder in the coming weeks.
What are your thoughts on the Enzo Maresca and Man City saga?
That, of course, changes if the Blues sell Fernandez. But Bergvall is not the ideal replacement for the 2022 World Cup winner; indeed, Chelsea need to sign a goalscoring midfielder if Fernandez is set to depart.
Bergvall is not that. He is a good young player, combative and hard-working with a decent array of passing. But it is fair to say that even in a Spurs shirt, he has hardly impressed. Better fish in the sea.
