Chelsea’s masterplan to sign Marc Guehi could now be ruined by two things

Chelsea could be about to hit a snag in their bid to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi this month.

Chelsea have Marc Guehi on their shortlist, with the club giving serious consideration to bringing in a new centre-back.

It comes after injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile. There are also doubts surrounding the future of Axel Disasi.

If the 26-year-old departs Chelsea, then the arrival of a new centre-half seems very likely.

Crystal Palace want straight cash deal for Marc Guehi

With Guehi‘s contract expiring next summer, it does not look like Palace are completely ruling out an exit.

However, according to the Daily Mail, while Chelsea have come up with a masterplan to sign Guehi, which involves Trevoh Chalobah heading in the opposite direction, Palace would prefer to do a straight cash deal. That is not the only problem, though.

Even if the Eagles do become open to doing a deal that would see them get to keep hold of Chalobah, there is no guarantee that they will be able to agree personal terms with him.

That is because the same outlet claims that there are doubts that Palace would be able to afford the 25-year-old’s salary.

Of course, with him only being at Selhurst Park on loan, Chelsea always have the option of recalling Chalobah to fix their defensive issues.

How much are Marc Guehi and Trevoh Chalobah currently earning?

According to Spotrac, Guehi is on a £50,000-a-week contract at Palace. If the England international is to move to Chelsea, though, then he will command a larger salary.

It has already been claimed that Guehi could demand a £170,000-a-week wage package from his former club.

As for Chalobah, the Daily Mail’s report states that his Chelsea contract is worth around £80,000 a week.

The above are big figures and could easily impact any sort of deal Chelsea are hoping to do. It would be cheaper for the Blues to just recall Chalobah, but it looks like they are keen to re-sign Guehi this month.
