The January transfer window officially opens on Wednesday. Speculation regarding Chelsea and potential additions has been rife, but where should Lampard look to strengthen? Here are the three positions that the Chelsea manager must focus on when the window opens.
Left-back

Left-back has been a problem position for Chelsea so far this season. Marcus Alonso, Emerson, and Cesar Azpilicueta have all been tried there, but none of them have nailed down a starting spot.
Each of the options currently available to Lampard have their flaws, and January presents an opportunity to sign a reliable left-back. It is arguably the biggest problem with the current Chelsea side and one that needs addressing.
Ben Chilwell has been talked about heavily, but other options include Benfica’s Alejandro Grimaldo and Valencia’s Jose Gaya.
Centre-back

Another position Lampard should look to strengthen in January is the central area of the defence. Chelsea have conceded a concerning number of goals this season, and have found clean sheets hard to come by.
Although the young defenders have impressed at times, their inexperience has shown. Bringing in a more experienced centre-back would not only improve the organisation and all-round sturdiness of the backline but could also aid the development of Fikayo Tomori and Kurt Zouma.
Striker

Tammy Abraham has been superb for Chelsea this season and deserves his place in the starting lineup for the rest of the season. However, the other options available to Lampard in the central role are not strong enough.
Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud have not covered themselves in glory when given the chance this season. If Abraham were to get injured, the Blues could seriously struggle for goals. A reliable understudy needs to be added in January if Chelsea are to reach the next level.
Timo Werner is the first name that springs to mind, but other options that the club could consider include Russian striker Fedor Chalov and Lille forward Victor Osimhen.
