The five craziest Chelsea summer transfer rumours that did not come true, including Man City star

Now that the summer transfer window has firmly closed, we can reflect on some of the craziest Chelsea-related stories from recent months.

The Blues were certainly extremely active in the market as they continued to remould Enzo Maresca’s squad. In fact, Chelsea’s summer signings feature some impressive deals, including new signings such as Joao Pedro and Liam Delap.

However, that doesn’t begin to tell the tale of just how many individuals were linked with moves to Stamford Bridge.

We’ve taken a look back at five crazy transfer rumours involving Chelsea this summer that ultimately didn’t happen.

Nico O’Reilly

Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly, 20, was loosely linked with a move to West London this summer.

Apparently, Chelsea made an enquiry about O’Reilly back in July. The versatile English youngster stayed put at the Etihad Stadium beyond deadline day, though.

It is quite obvious that the Man City academy graduate is now an important member of Pep Guardiola’s squad, featuring in two of the opening three Premier League matches this season.

Morgan Gibbs-White

Morgan Gibbs-White was at the centre of transfer speculation for parts of the summer. However, the 25-year-old attacking midfielder, who’s also an England international, has remained with Nottingham Forest.

Even though Sky Sports claimed in July that Tottenham triggered a £60m release clause in Gibbs-White’s contract, he ended up signing a new deal at the City Ground to stay in the Midlands.

Gibbs-White was named as a potential Chelsea target during June, but nothing ever advanced.

While Gibbs-White’s form has been below par by his standards in the opening weeks of the season, we’re sure that he will soon kick into gear again.

Rodrygo

Even though Chelsea made some strong signings in the summer, they never got that statement name through the door. Real Madrid winger Rodrygo, 24, definitely would have been just that.

In May, Chelsea put Rodrygo on their radar and even spoke with the player’s camp to signal potential interest. Eventually, Chelsea decided to withdraw from the Rodrygo race in July to focus on Xavi Simons, who’s another Blues target they didn’t end up signing.

Brazilian attacker Rodrygo stayed at the Bernabeu to be part of the new-look Madrid side under Xabi Alonso.

Fermin Lopez

The Fermin Lopez transfer saga was fascinating in the final weeks of the window, but nobody should be surprised that he ended up staying put at Barcelona.

Barcelona attacking midfielder Lopez, 22, decided on deadline day not to join Chelsea despite ‘strong interest’ from the Premier League giants.

Jorgen Strand Larsen

After a dramatic summer for the player, Jorgen Strand Larsen is still at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Daily Mail reported in August that Wolves rejected two bids from Newcastle United for Strand Larsen, the second one worth £55m. The 25-year-old striker only joined permanently at Molineux Stadium this summer after last season’s successful loan spell, so it would have been a shock to see him sold immediately.

Remarkably, Chelsea reached out to Larsen’s agents on deadline day as they looked for a last-minute centre-forward signing, but nothing ever came of it.
