Chelsea making a move to re-sign Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix this summer is not something many people would’ve predicted.

However, Chelsea have been strongly linked in the last couple of days with Joao Felix.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed via X over the weekend that Chelsea are in talks with Atletico about signing Felix. Apparently, this could be part of the Conor Gallagher deal, which appears to have hit a bit of a temporary standstill.

Elsewhere, journalist Matt Law reported via X on Monday that Felix has expressed a desire to rejoin Chelsea.

The 24-year-old attacker previously spent a brief time on loan at Stamford Bridge. He spent the second half of the 2022/23 campaign on loan with Chelsea, scoring four goals in 20 appearances across all competitions.

Meanwhile, he spent last season out loan with Barcelona, scoring 10 goals and making six assists in 44 matches.

Joao Felix would lower wages to join Chelsea

According to The Daily Mail, Felix has shown a willingness to drop his wage demands to help secure a transfer to Chelsea this summer.

It is explained that the current Blues hierarchy place great importance on player wages.

The report explains that the average wage of the squad was pushing £200,000-a-week when they took charge two years ago, but the basic salary is now on average £70,000-a-week with heavily incentivised deals with big bonuses.

Should Chelsea sign Joao Felix?

Unless one or two high-profile Chelsea attackers leave during what’s left of the transfer window, bringing Felix back to West London doesn’t make too much sense.

Felix does have superb versatility to play several attacking positions, but the Blues squad is looking pretty stacked right now.

It’s hard to imagine him forcing his way into a central position as a striker or No 10 when the likes of Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu, Christopher Nkunku and Cole Palmer exist.

There could be an argument that Felix would be an upgrade on the left wing, but it may require Raheem Sterling or Mykhailo Mudryk leaving to make room in the squad.
