Chelsea must make signing ‘exceptional’ goalkeeper a priority after Filip Jorgensen howler, he’s already a target for the club

Filip Jorgensen was brought into the Chelsea team after a series of errors by Robert Sanchez between the sticks.

Initially, he did not do too badly. Filip Jorgensen did a respectable job when Chelsea beat West Ham United 2-1 earlier this month.

However, the goalkeeper was at fault for Aston Villa’s winning goal in their 2-1 victory against the Blues on Saturday.

Jorgensen has obviously not had as many chances as Sanchez in the Premier League and perhaps deserves a few more. But he and his teammate are both costing Chelsea too many important points.

At this stage, the club have to sign a new shot-stopper this summer and already have a couple of targets.

Chelsea have identified Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher as a target

Following Jorgensen’s costly mistake, it would not be a surprise if talk about Chelsea signing a goalkeeper in the next transfer window emerged in the coming days.

But before Chelsea’s defeat at Villa Park, the Blues were already being linked with other shot-stoppers, including Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher.

It has been reported that Chelsea are interested in signing Kelleher to address their goalkeeper issue. With Alisson Becker being the Reds’ No.1, Kelleher does not always get to play, but the 26-year-old is still highly rated at Anfield.

“Caoimhin is exceptional,” Jurgen Klopp told Liverpool’s official website in a post-match press conference last season.

As a result of being Alisson’s deputy, Kelleher has only made eight starts in the Premier League this term. It means he could fancy a move to Stamford Bridge in the summer in a bid to get more game time.

How Caoimhin Kelleher and Filip Jorgensen compare

Kelleher is not on the same level as Alisson, Ederson or Thibaut Courtois, for example, and they are the calibre of keeper that Enzo Maresca probably needs if he is to take Chelsea back to the top.

That being said, the Chelsea manager clearly requires an upgrade on Jorgensen and Sanchez, and Kelleher has the potential to be that.

In the Champions League this season, Kelleher has an 82.4% save percentage, which is one of the highest in the competition.

In the Premier League, that drops down to 71%, which is slightly higher than Jorgensen’s save percentage. The Republic of Ireland international has also kept three clean sheets to Jorgensen’s zero, but that perhaps says more about Liverpool’s defence as a whole compared to Chelsea’s.

Both shot-stoppers have made one error leading to goal, so Kelleher is not perfect either. But that is still four fewer than Sanchez.

The goalkeeper market does not look great right now, but Chelsea need a new No.1 and Kelleher could be the best option available in the summer.
