Chelsea’s £45m Tottenham decision proves BlueCo are finally learning from their mistakes

Over the years, BlueCo have made so many young signings regardless of what the first team actually needs. But this summer, a decision made suggests BlueCo are finally learning.

Even the players arriving this summer are examples of BlueCo just signing young talent without thinking whether the arriving young gems are actually going to get a chance, or if they have a path into the side.

Geovany Quenda was signed shortly after deals were agreed for Jamie Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho. Emmanuel Emegha joins while Chelsea still boasts Joao Pedro, Liam Delap and other options up front.

It’s happened ever since BlueCo arrived in 2022. Young players with huge potential would be signed due to their resale value, simply seen as commodities. There was no thought given for their first-team impact.

Chelsea make Lucas Bergvall decision, and it’s the right one

Back in January, Chelsea were linked with Spurs’ Lucas Bergvall. Amid reports that Chelsea are now scouting Bergvall at the World Cup, the Sweden international has handed in a transfer request at Spurs.

Spurs are seemingly open to his exit for a £45m fee. But are Chelsea still interested in signing the Spurs youngster? Chelsea fans are hopeful that the club does not get tempted to sign the Sweden midfielder.

Now, according to the Evening Standard, Chelsea have made a decision on Bergvall. The Blues are not planning to sign the midfielder from Spurs, and it shows BlueCo have learnt from their past mistakes.

It shows that they’ve realised Xabi Alonso already has numerous midfield options, even if the inevitable exit of Enzo Fernandez does occur. If Chelsea signed Bergvall, he wouldn’t improve their current options.

Andrey Santos is a better player than Lucas Bergvall

Whatever system Alonso plays next season, Caicedo will be first choice in the middle of the park. This summer is about finding a partner to go alongside him, whether that be Fernandez or a replacement.

Who would you prefer to see in goal next season, Diogo Costa or Robert Sanchez?

Behind those two, is Andrey Santos and below the Brazilian, Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo. If the Blues were to pursue Bergvall, contrary to reports, he would hope to go above Santos in the pecking order.

But the stats from last season’s Premier League prove Santos is the better player. Better pass completion (90.1% vs 81%), more successful passes (718 v 450) and more duels won – Santos won 62% – is proof.

Santos also stands tallest when it comes to defensive contributions and an overall FotMob rating of almost 0.2 difference. BlueCo have learnt that there’s no point in signing young gems, like Bergvall.
