The goalkeeper position at Chelsea has been a point of contention since the start of the transfer window.
When the final day of the Premier League season wrapped up, most Chelsea fans were accepting of the idea that a new face was needed between the posts. But following a quite brilliant showing from Robert Sanchez in the Club World Cup, the future of the position has been left in question.
Enzo Maresca looks set to keep Sanchez at Stamford Bridge, opting instead to send Mike Penders on loan to Strasbourg. But that hasn’t stopped speculation over a summer addition in goal, with the unsettled Gianluigi Donnarumma of PSG appearing to be available.

Chelsea have long admired Donnarumma, and the Italian would be a welcome addition in the eyes of many around the Bridge.
Fabrizio Romano says Gianluigi Donnarumma could stay at PSG
Over the past week, the general consensus around PSG was that Donnarumma would be leaving, but a fresh update from Fabrizio Romano on X suggests the decision is not yet made. He says: “Gigio Donnarumma and his camp do not rule out to stay at Paris Saint-Germain.
“Even with contract expiring in June 2026 and Chevalier coming soon, Gigio could stay and compete for his spot as he did with Navas and then, decide his future in the next months.”
It’s hard to imagine a shortage of offers for the 26-year-old, who helped PSG to a first ever Champions League title.
Given how the goalkeeper market looks this summer, any team who is looking to upgrade in this position should be looking at Donnarumma, especially given the short time left on his contract.
Chelsea should do everything they can to bring Gianluigi Donnarumma to the club
While no new reports have come out to indicate a deal being in the works, Chelsea were interested in Donnarumma earlier this month, and it’s hard to imagine they have closed the door on a potential move.
With the Blues looking likely to challenge at the very top next season, an upgrade such as this would be a statement of intent.
No one can deny the brilliant form Sanchez displayed this summer, but concerns persist around his ability on the ball and often rash decision-making.
With PSG and Donnarumma currently at a stalemate, the prospect of him staying and running down his contract is one to monitor.
It could open up a free transfer opportunity next summer, but whether Chelsea feel they can maximise the upcoming season with their current No. 1 may be the deciding factor in this story.
