Fabrizio Romano has given an update on the future of Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku with the transfer window now open.

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding Christopher Nkunku‘s future, as the 27-year-old is not getting regular game time in the Premier League.

Under Enzo Maresca, Nkunku has made just three starts in the top flight. His most recent came in Chelsea‘s 2-0 loss to Ipswich Town on Monday.

Barcelona are one club Nkunku is currently being linked to, though it remains to be seen whether a deal would actually be viable for them, given all of their financial issues.

Christopher Nkunku will have to ask Chelsea for transfer

If Nkunku does want to leave Chelsea this month, it looks like the Frenchman will have to tell the club that he wants out.

Explaining what Nkunku will have to do to secure a transfer away from Stamford Bridge, Romano said on his YouTube channel: “I keep receiving many questions also on the situation of Christopher Nkunku at Chelsea, many of you asking me about that.

“It’s important to clarify that internally at Chelsea, coaching staff, the coach Enzo Maresca, the board of the club, the owners of the club, all of them, they want to keep Christopher Nkunku and they believe Christopher Nkunku is an important player for their project.

“But the only way for Christopher Nkunku to leave Chelsea in January is if the player goes to Chelsea, goes to the manager, goes to the board and asks them to leave because he’s not happy with his game time.”

The France international could not make the most of the chance he was given against Ipswich. During the game, there was one moment where Nkunku was furious with Joao Felix after the Portuguese refused to pass him the ball.

Why PSG could be the most likely destination for Christopher Nkunku this month

There is no guarantee that Nkunku will depart Chelsea during the January transfer window. But if he does, it would not be a surprise to see him make a return to Paris Saint-Germain.

PSG could be in the market for a new forward, with Randal Kolo Muani currently being linked with a move away from the Parc des Princes.

It is also believed that PSG have already been in contact with Nkunku’s entourage about a summer transfer. If the former RB Leipzig man becomes available now, perhaps they will consider a January move.

Chelsea have actually been linked with Kolo Muani, so maybe a Kolo Muani-Nkunku swap deal could also be possible.

All in all, then, Nkunku leaving Chelsea in January and rejoining PSG is not something that should be ruled out.
