Why Chelsea could be at a disadvantage to Tottenham in the race for Mathys Tel

The race for Chelsea target and Bayern Munich winger Mathys Tel is really starting to heat up.

Chelsea were being linked with Mathys Tel first, but that was before the 19-year-old expressed his desire to leave Bayern Munich.

Since then, a host of other clubs have registered their interest in signing Tel, including Chelsea’s London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Tel was recently asked about his future, but the 19-year-old was very coy on the subject.

Tottenham have good relationship with Bayern Munich

Tottenham sold Harry Kane to Bayern back in 2023, while Eric Dier also swapped the London club for the German giants.

According to The Telegraph, Spurs now have a good relationship with Bayern as a result.

The same outlet claims that both Tottenham and Chelsea are interested in Tel, but perhaps the above could give the former an advantage.

There is a good chance of the French youngster ending up in London, with Arsenal also in the race for Tel.

Mathys Tel more likely to choose Tottenham over Chelsea

Chelsea are nine places and 16 points above Tottenham in the Premier League table. Unlike their London rivals, the Blues also have a good chance of qualifying for the Champions League.

Yet Tel joining Ange Postecoglou’s men seems more likely than him linking up with Enzo Maresca‘s side.

The France U21 international wants to leave Bayern in order to get more minutes and will feel that he has a better chance of getting that in north London.

In fact, it has already been claimed that Tel does not want to join Chelsea because of fears surrounding game time.

It is true, Tel would face competition at Chelsea, who have some really talented wide players. But the Bayern star is versatile, while no one knows what is going to happen with Mykhailo Mudryk. It means that Tel could get plenty of opportunities on the left if he joins Chelsea, but it seems that the former Rennes man wants guarantees.
