There’s a player in Chelsea’s first-team squad that should have just played his final game for the club.
The vision of the Chelsea owners is slowly coming into focus with significant progress in the last year, but there are still a few areas that need addressing. In particular, they need to make a few adjustments to the Blues squad before they’re ready to challenge right at the very top once again.
Enzo Maresca is the right man in the manager’s dugout to lead the project, even if his side have suffered a mini dip in results during the festive schedule.

Chelsea should sell Axel Disasi after Aaron Anselmino update
Chelsea signed Axel Disasi from Monaco in a £39m deal (Sky Sports) in the summer of 2023, but we think he should have just played his last game for the club.
Disasi, 26, is someone that the Blues should be looking to sell in the upcoming January transfer window. Ultimately, the French defender, who can play centre-back or right-back, doesn’t offer too much value to the current squad.
It’s good news that Disasi wants to leave Chelsea in January because he doesn’t want to sit on the bench. The versatile defender has played 15 games across all competitions this season, but he’s only made five appearances in the Premier League. Incidentally, Bayern Munich are eyeing Chelsea’s Disasi as a potential target for 2025.
| Competition | Appearances |
| Conference League | 6 |
| Premier League | 5 |
| Conference League qualifiers | 2 |
| Carabao Cup | 2 |
On top of Disasi’s struggles to impress on the pitch, it makes even more sense for him to move on next month after the update on Aaron Anselmino.
Blues youngster Anselmino, who’s aged just 19, can be a perfect replacement for Disasi in the first-team squad. The Argentine centre-half signed at Stamford Bridge back in the summer, but he’s been out on loan with Boca Juniors.
However, Anselmino is now returning to Chelsea immediately ahead of joining up with the senior group for training next week.
The South American teenager will soon be mixing it with Maresca’s squad, so integrating him as extra cover in defence feels like a no-brainer.
Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo and Benoit Badiashile are fighting it out for Chelsea’s two starting centre-back positions. We’d love to see Anselmino slot in as the fifth option as he’s adapting to life in a new country and a new club in the second half of the season.
Disasi’s exit would make room for Anselmino at centre-half. Additionally, the Blues certainly have enough cover at right-back as well with Reece James, Malo Gusto and Josh Acheampong.
Axel Disasi would benefit from move
Even though Disasi has captained Chelsea at times in Europe this season, he’s certainly quite far down the defensive pecking order. He’s played plenty of his minutes out of position at right-back, where he looks uncomfortable and slow.
The Frenchman started for the Blues in their 2-0 loss away to Ipswich yesterday, which should be his last appearance for the club.
Jason Cundy criticised Disasi’s Chelsea performance versus Ipswich, especially after a big mistake that led to a goal.
It would be best for the 26-year-old to move to a new club in the New Year and go play consistently in his preferred role as a centre-half.
