Jens Lehmann claims Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca ‘will regret’ what he just said about one player

Former Premier League star Jens Lehman believes that Chelsea’s Enzo Maresca is going to feel some regret regarding what he’s just said about one Blues player.

Enzo Maresca watched his Chelsea side pick up a much-needed three points in the Premier League on Tuesday night, beating Southampton 4-0 at Stamford Bridge.

As it stands, they currently sit fifth place in a congested Premier League table as the race for Champions League qualification intensifies.

Interestingly, Maresca’s post-match comments after Southampton about Filip Jorgensen were a major talking point.

Chelsea fans were booing Jorgensen against Southampton because of the goalkeeper’s persistence to keep playing it short when building out from the back. However, after the game, Maresca admitted he threatened to substitute Jorgensen if he started playing long balls up the pitch.

Jens Lehmann claims Enzo Maresca will regret comments about Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen

Retired goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, who won the Premier League with Arsenal in 2004, has delivered his verdict on Maresca’s comments about Jorgensen. Unsurprisingly, he’s behind the Blues shot-stopper as part of the goalkeeper’s union.

Lehmann suspects that the Chelsea manager will have some regret around what he said about Jorgensen.

He told talkSPORT: “Sometimes I’m a fan of it [goalkeepers playing out from the back] when you have space and when there’s a need for it. What the manager said, if I was his superior, I would tell him you have to understand football in a different way because we’re not here to play a certain style, we are here for Chelsea Football Club to win games. They won that game [against Southampton], but they haven’t won every game…

“I was surprised that the Chelsea coach used that phrase: ‘When you play long ball I will change you.’ He will probably regret that because it’s not about playing a certain style, it’s about winning a game.”

We’re doubtful that Maresca will feel any regret because he firmly believes in his principles as a coach, and we’ve not seen anything yet in his coaching career to suggest he’ll drastically change.

Chelsea believe Jorgensen has ‘elite potential’ as the keeper now gets his chance to establish himself as the long-term No 1. He’s got plenty of convincing to do to prove he’s better than teammate Robert Sanchez, though.

Filip Jorgensen should be feeling the pressure

Jorgensen was largely limited to cup appearances in the first half of the season as he warmed the bench for the Premier League schedule. However, Sanchez was dropped from the league XI a few weeks ago and it’s created a huge opening.

In truth, Jorgensen is struggling to seize his opportunity right now during a challenging period.

The 22-year-old gloveman has started to look a bit more shaky with the ball at his feet. Ultimately, whoever the current Chelsea goalkeeper is, he needs to match Maresca’s style of playing out from defence.

Chelsea are considering a new goalkeeper signing for the summer transfer window, so Jorgensen needs to pull something out of the bag quickly to make them rethink their plans.
